The New iPad Tablet - Apple's Latest Innovation

It was inevitable, yes it was bound to happen, with all the new gadgetry being released by other companies, it was inevitable for Apple to release its own version of a computer tablet. So, after the iPod and the iPhone, Apple released the next of "i" product lines, the iPad.

So what is the iPad,this hand held tablet that is about to change the world of computing?

The new iPad is for all intents and purposes a flat rectangular shaped computer with a touch screen that uses the same technology as the iPhone. This same technology has now been re-designed for the larger screen to give a more defined response,it does precisely what you ask of it whether you are reading e-mails, or checking out routes and maps, web browsing, watching movies, or showing off your prized photos.

The iPad tablet's multitouch screen is a dream, it is 9.7 inches diagonally from corner to corner and the screen's resolution is a dense 1024 x 768. The iPad's LED-backlit display incorporates a screen technology called IPS, or in-plane switching, that Apple says provides crisp, clear images and consistent colors with ultra-wide viewing angles. The screen is really impressive it is almost as if you are holing a larger iPhone in your hand.

Weighing in at around 1.5 pounds the tablet measures 9.56 x 7.47 inches and is just 0.5 inches thick, which is just very slightly thicker than the iPhone 3GS.

The new iPad also incorporates Apple's office suite, the iWork desktop suite. This facility gives you more than just a web surfing tool, you get a word processor, spreadsheets and the document manager that gives you ready made design themes to create your own personal styles.

Battery life is something like ten hours or so for perpetual use. That ten hours of constant use will include video viewing, so you could in all probability watch about six feature films before the iPad gives up on you. Charge the battery overnight and you can use it all day the following day.

There are one or two minus points, there is no camera and that is a bit of a let down, so you get no video facility and the new device can feel slighty weighty. In all though there are some real advantages, the screen is brilliant and the rate of change from one application to another is amazing.

If you are an iPod and iPhone fan then you should definitely check out this latest innovation from Apple now.

Diving Into Apple's iPad Tablet Features

If you have not physically looked at the Apple iPod tablet then you need to know that it very much resembles an iPhone or iPod touch but with a larger display. Its trim design with the smooth surfaced glass and a single button centered at the bottom is Apple's familiar design. The viewing display is 9.7 inches. The back of the device can be likened to the MacBook Air due to the curvy aluminum surfaces. The button that powers it off and puts it into sleep mode can be found at top right hand corner and the headphones can be plugged in on the top left hand corner. The volume controls are present on the right hand side of the device. And finally the inlet for the docking station and speaker vents are located at the bottom.

The iPod is lightweight and can easily be carried around due to being a mere 1.5 pounds. The look and feel is superb and with the use of your fingers you but be prepared to clean off the smudge marks regularly.

Apple has developed iPod so that it can sit either on your lap or on a table. Alternatively you can stand whilst holding it with one hand and maneuvering around its interface with your other hand is easily achievable. All these methods are accomplishable but they will take some time getting used to especially the typing part.

The iPod is running with the same operating system as the iPhone however it comes with modifications to accommodate a bigger screen resolution. The most significant changes are completely new drop down menu with all applications, split screens for application displaying as well as nifty little pop-overs that appear over working areas. There exists an array of other application changes that one will see once you make use of them.

Sadly the iPod is not a mobile phone and you will not be able make phone calls or utilize sms functionality but with the ability to run all other applications it is indeed a nice tool. If you are gaming fanatic then you will enjoy the scaling up features it provides for running applications so that you it can occupy the entire display.

Could Apple's New iPad Tablet Device Revolutionize Schools?

I still recall the back breaking load of my college text books fondly. Not to mention the insane prices and the fact that a text book typically isn't used more than a few semesters. Many students and schools already make use of laptops/netbooks to replace and/or enhance text book based curriculum, but there are penalties for using them. Unless you invest in high end models you are looking at 5 pounds for a laptop and accessories. Also despite manufacture claims, expecting more than an hour or two from a laptop battery is foolish. The power cord shuffle that a dedicated laptop student has to perform for an entire days schedule is nightmarish to think about.

How could the iPad improve this situation? On price, a low end laptop or netbook is the same as a 16GB iPad, so a wash there. If the battery lives up to Apple's claims, 10 hours will meet a typical student's schedule. A version of iWork will be available for the iPad which will students access to basic office style applications. While the iPad doesn't do handwriting recognition out of the box, a student could use its built in mic to record lectures. The iPad definitely has potential to assists students, but only time will tell if it can replace a laptop.

Another place an iPad could come in handy for a student is in research. A company called Questia has a subscription based service aimed at students that allows for easy researching of journals and scientific publications. While this service is available for the iPhone and any web accessible computer, the ease of access the iPad promises could only improve a service such as this.

Given time to mature, I think the iPad and its apps could benefit schools and students to a high degree.
