Cons

The cameras are VGA poor quality and the screen resolution could be improved. Unlike the Telstra or Samsung tablets, there's no phone functionality.

Pros

Samsung's Galaxy Tab offers a larger 10.1 inch screen with 1280x800 which beat Apple's 9.7 inch screen with 1024x768 screen resolution. The tablet runs on Android 3.0 or Honeycomb juice which brings the benefits of multi-tasking and customizable widgets to the tablet. The tablet offers an 8MP camera and 2MP front facing camera, in comparison to the iPad's VGA camera. The Galaxy Tablet 10.1 certainly comes out as a worthy competitor to iPad 2 compared to most Android tablets out there.

Cons

The Galaxy tablet comes in the same size as the iPad 2, although the tablet is thicker than the iPad 2 measuring 0.43 inches. The Galaxy is only available in two options 16GB and 32GB.

Motorola Xoom

Price: $799 outright

Pros

The Xoom performs outstandingly with Android 3.0 Honeycomb, the NVidia Tegra 2 dual core processor skims the iPad 2 giving it a graphical advantage over most tablets. The Xoom holds built-in apps such as Google Maps, Gmail and Google Calendar still trump anything built into the iPad 2. The Motorola Xoom tablet has customizable widgets and also has a sleek & sexy design.

Cons

Besides the price tag being very high, the Xoom battery life is shorter than the iPad 2 with a fewer apps available. In terms of specs; Motorola Xoom is one of the top Android tablets to date. But that comes with an expensive price. Is it worth it? You decide.

Five Reasons to Choose an Android Tablet Over an iPad

One of the hottest electronic products this year is clearly the Apple iPad. However these devices clearly lack a lot of desired features (flash, SD card slot, USB port, etc) that Google Android tablets have built in to all there devices. In terms of functionality, features and bang for you buck, an Android tablet is the clear and far away winner.

The top competitor for the Apple iPad right now is any one of a number of Google Android-powered devices manufactured by the likes of Motorola, Samsung, Dell and others. I've done my research and played with a few of the new Android tablets and at this point have decided that an Android tablet is a better choice than the iPad. 1. Choice of Size

The Apple iPad is closest in size to a 10×8 picture frame with its dimensions at 9.56 x 7.47 x.5 in. There are no other size options for the iPad, unless you're of the opinion that the iPad is merely a giant iPhone, and in that case the iPhone could count as a smaller version.

Unlike the iPad, the various Android tablets come in a range of sizes. The sizes include 5-inch, 7-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch. The 5-inch tablets are admittedly just slightly larger than popular touchscreen smartphones, which tend to top out in the 4-inch range. But if they make them, there's obviously some kind of market for them. You can go bigger or smaller than the iPad with an Android.

2. True Multitasking

Apple has avoided true multitasking on the iPad primarily due to battery life and performance concerns, the reason they always leave off features on their new iPhones as well.

There are already some Android tablets running off dual-core processors, which have more than enough power to handle true multitasking. The multitasking panel is also extremely easy to navigate.

Apple should have figured out how to deliver true multitasking.

3. Cameras

Apple made a huge mistake in not including a camera on the iPad. At the very least it should have included and outward facing camera, but if it really wanted to be a winner, it would have also had a second, front-facing camera that users could use for video chatting.

Most Android tablets have inward cameras for video chatting. Google's native camera app also has some nice features that will let you alter your image, without having to download and edit it on your computer.

4. No Syncing Required

Whether you own an iPod, iPhone, or an iPad, you must sync the device with iTunes using a computer to transfer downloads purchased on your computer to the device. It's a royal pain, but it's Apple's way of keeping their users coming back to iTunes. It's also a very slow process.

With the Android Market Web Store, you can buy apps on your computer and send them to your device without syncing. Brilliant!

5. Replaceable Batteries

One of the things that irked me most about the iPhone and the iPad was the battery. It's not removable, and if it goes, you have to get a whole new device. If yours breaks and still happens to be under warranty, Apple will send you a new one - for a fee. For the iPad, if the battery goes, you can send in your old one and they'll send you a new one for $99. Oh, and make sure you synced it before it died because when they send you out the new one it won't have any of your apps or personal information on it. If you forgot to sync, you're S.O.L.

Android devices have their own batteries which are replaceable. If the battery goes, you just buy a new one. Or if you're under warranty, the manufacturer can send you a new one without having to bother with taking your entire tablet.

3. Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101

iPad 2 or Android Tablet?

The original Apple iPad has had a great first year. Although tablet pcs have been around for quite a few years, the sluggish and unfriendly performance offered never captured the publics' imagination to any great degree. Now, with the unimaginable success of smartphones over the years, it was time for the tablet to make a comeback. Apple have exploited the lack of competition in this end of the market to build a sizable advantage over the competition, mainly from Android. However, not to outdone by Apple, Google have moved swiftly to update their Os for tablets and help companies like Motorola and Samsung get their own tablets to the market quite quickly. But has the "rushed" launch of the Galaxy Tab hampered their momentum? The original Tab was released to the market using the smartphone version of Android and commentators felt this was a bad move, especially considering how well the iPad performed. However, with Honeycomb now being drip-fed onto the latest and most powerful Android tablets, the playing field has been levelled somewhat.

With the iPad 2 featuring an updated dual-core processor, the Android tablets quickly followed suit with the Motorola Xoom and Galaxy Tab 10.1 featuring similar engines. These are widely considered the "Big 3" in the tablet world at the moment, RIM's playbook and other such tablets are not exactly garnishing the greatest reviews. Recent figures released point to the iPad having 89% of worldwide and 97% of US traffic. Android has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years, taking a sizable chuck of the smartphone market. Non 'premium' smartphones are doing excellently for the Android brand, offering consumers a complete smartphone experience at a fraction of the price of a new iPhone 4 or Galaxy S2. Honeycomb and future Android updates will continue to improve their tablet experience also, offering a flexibility an Apple device will never have.

Apple, I feel, will continue to dominate the tablet sector for years to come. With the iPad and iPad 2, they have built a brand people want. Microsoft has had tablet PCs out for years and been unable to convince the public or even the vendors that they are the future. Apple has built a lifestyle tool in the iPad. A 'tablet pc' may sound daunting for casual users, an iPad is 'just a big iPhone', but the public love it. Now with iOS5 on the horizon coupled with the iCloud and iTunes Share services, the ease of use can only get better. Better multitasking, tabbed browsing, notifications and multi-touch gestures are some of the new features available for the iPad and iPad 2 this September. Unlike the latest versions of Android, these will be directly available for download to your device, no limitations. iTunes is the biggest music store in the world, the new features in iCloud and iTunes share will only increase this.

The winner here? Well both the iPad 2 and Android equivalents are all fantastic devices, similarly priced and when it comes down to it, really quite similar. Samsung Tab - Price Isn't Everything Or How To Really Compete In The Tablet PC Market

When they came out with the Samsung Galaxy Tab, I thought it was the perfect tablet PC all around, even priced right. Now, I see they recently came out with the Samsung Tab 10.1, matching the size of the iPad. And I'm wondering - Why?

Then one night, I'm sitting there watching TV with my kids. We don't have tiVo, so we have to endure the commercials. And a commercial for a frig comes on. Who would be interested in a refrigerator commercial, right? But this one is kind of cool.

It's got cool music. And the frig has some interesting features - cool apps. That's right, it's a Samsung frig with apps!

Talk about embrace and extend!

Take new technology - or existing technology, fully utilize it completely. And when you think you've exhausted the use of it in your niche, expand the application into other niches. What a concept!

That's when it hit me; Samsung is pretty smart.

So maybe their marketing strategy all along was to launch into the competition with Apple in the tablet PC world by entering with their ace - the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7, then immediately follow with their wild card (what everyone else started with), the Samsung Tab 10.1.

Pretty smart strategy, if you ask me.

First Samsung comes out with it's own version of a tablet PC. But it's actually more like a tablet computer because it can play flash video. Then they do something else that separates it from the iPad; they make it smaller.

How much smaller? Small enough to fit into your pocket.

That makes a lot of sense. If you just wanted a bigger iPhone, why not just get a real computer? A notebook or a tablet computer. If you just wanted a smaller computer, why not just get a smart phone? These days, the average smart phone is pretty much like a little computer.

So when Apple blew up the iPhone into the size of a tablet PC with the iPad, all it really did was add apps to the tablet PC market. It really didn't do anything to change the real mobility of the tablet PC. The iPad isn't that much smaller or lighter than a good tablet computer.

That's why Samsung was so smart when they did what they did. They brought a whole new dimension to the mobile computing world - literally, by making the Samsung Galaxy Tab exactly the right size for good visibility and better mobility.

Think about it; there's only so much you can do to compete in a market where so many good, smart companies have access to the same technology. True, everyone's going to try to make their equipment faster, sharper, more memory, longer battery life, etc.

And the apps? Sure Apple's got their Apps store, but everyone else has the Android Marketplace. And other's are bringing in their own entries into the apps market.

So Samsung comes out and does something so simple and smart; give people more choices. Specifically, people like me who already have a notebook/tablet PC, and an iPhone, but don't want to spend $500 plus so I can have apps with my tablet. However, to make it smaller and more mobile, but not the size of my phone - I'm sold!

That's why the Galaxy Tab is the perfect tablet PC. And it's cheaper than the iPad. So why follow the perfect tablet PC with another version of the iPad?

It goes back to what I was saying at the beginning, embrace and extend. This seems to be something Samsung is very good at doing. Them putting apps into kitchen appliances is extending. Them coming out with their own version of the iPad, but better, is fully embracing.

How is the Samsung Tab 10.1 better than the iPad? It's thinner, lighter, and it can do more. Samsung is truly fully utilizing technology to improve their product.

And as long as Samsung keeps giving people more options and more of what we want, they'll keep getting our business. With the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Tab 10.1, Samsung has shown how to take the lead in the tablet PC market. I'm excited to see what they'll come up with next!

Should I Keep My StupidPhone and Get a Tablet, or Buy a SmartPhone and Keep My Laptop?

Okay so, how many personal tech devices does one person need? The reason I ask, is because the other day I saw someone playing on their iPhone IV, and then they pulled out an iPad tablet and they were surfing the news. It seems to me they spent entirely too much money, and an abundance of time loading all those special apps from the Apple Store. Since they were a techie, and very much into personal tech, I engaged them in a conversation, but I soon realized they were so busy multitasking between devices, that I wondered if they even heard a word I said.

We got to talking and this same individual owns an Apple laptop computer as well. And they said they wanted to stick with Apple so that all their devices would sync up correctly, and they could take music off of their iPod, and put it onto their iPhone and iPad. I thought to myself that's just great, and if Apple ever comes out with an iCar, they will probably buy one of those too. Nevertheless, I got to thinking that I kind of like my StupidPhone, and that I don't really need a Smartphone, and I am waiting until the technology gets better to buy a tablet computer, and I probably won't be buying an Apple anything.

It is not that I don't think that currently be Apple has superior futures, it's just that every time Apple comes out with something, the marketplace responds with better technology, better components, and a better price tag too. The question is; should I keep my stupid-phone and get a tablet, or should I buy a smart phone and keep my laptop? Now, I'm not the only one making such choices, because the other day I met a grandma that had a Kindle, as her e-book reader, and she was considering buying an iPhone, but not an iPad because she already had her Kindle.

It seems that Intel is going to make a chip for a notebook which is very robust, that will also be able to be run on the next generation of tablets. I am positive if I wait a few more generations for the iPad VII or VIII, that I can get holographic video 3-D conferencing features, and maybe I should just wait and let the technology leapfrog itself until I can have exactly what I want at the price that I believe is fair. In any case I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

Tablet computers have been around for quite some time but they never really caught on among the wider consumer markets. Nearly all of them had been pitched for highly specialized purposes in the corporate setting.
